Central Indiana, season by season

When to wash the house and clean the gutters around Geist

Wash the house and windows in late spring, once the pollen settles. Clean the gutters in November, after the leaves are down. Do the driveway in summer or early fall, before the first freeze. Here is why, and what each season is good for.

  1. Spring

    April to May

Book: House soft wash, Window cleaning, Gutter cleaning on homes under maples

Tree pollen peaks around April in central Indiana, with maple, juniper and poplar among the main sources. Washing the house and windows once the worst of it has settled means they stay clean into summer. Maple seeds and catkins land in the gutters at the same time.

  2. Summer

    June to August

Book: House soft wash, Driveway and patio cleaning

Warm days help the cleaning solution work and let the house dry fast. Green growth shows up on shaded north walls and on driveways under trees, and summer is when patios and pool decks get the most use.

  3. Fall

    September to November

Book: Gutter cleaning, Window cleaning before the holidays, House washing early in the season

Peak fall color around Indianapolis usually comes from about Halloween through the first week of November, and the leaves come down after that. The average first freeze in Indianapolis is October 14, so house and driveway washing fit best in September and early October, and gutters come last, once most leaves are down.

  4. Winter

    December to March

Book: Gutter cleaning on mild, dry days, Booking spring washes ahead

Freezing days are no good for washing: water turns to ice on siding, walks and driveways. Gutters that filled after the last fall cleaning can still be cleared on a dry day above freezing, and it is a good time to put a spring house wash on the calendar.

Timing questions

What is the best month to wash a house in Indiana?

Late April through September works best. By late April the heaviest tree pollen has usually settled, and through the summer the cleaning solution works well and the house dries fast. After the average first freeze in mid-October, washing depends on finding a warm, dry day.

Should I clean my gutters before or after the leaves fall?

After most of them are down. Around Indianapolis the trees usually peak from about Halloween into early November, so a cleaning in early to mid November catches most of the fall. Homes under big oaks or near woods often need a second cleaning in late November or December.

Can you wash a house in the winter?

Not on freezing days. Below freezing, rinse water turns to ice on the siding, steps and driveway, which is a hazard for you and for us. On a mild, dry winter day it can work, but most people wait for spring.

Does the City of Fishers check whether houses are clean?

Fishers reviews neighborhoods from the street on a rotating schedule, and its list of exterior items includes keeping exterior walls clean and free of algae. If staff see a problem, the first step is a friendly letter explaining the issue and giving a timeline to fix it, not a fine. A soft wash takes care of green or black growth on siding.
